Strength is more than lifting weights — it’s about building a body that performs, lasts, and thrives. Here’s how to move from “working out” to true physical mastery.
“This article is part of the Peak Human Performance Ascension Training Series — our proven, three-phase approach to helping high-performing adults build lasting strength, energy, and confidence. Whether you’re starting fresh, looking to lean out, or ready to get seriously strong, this series will walk you through each step with clarity, purpose, and a strategy that works in real life.”
Introduction
Welcome to the final post in The Ascension Training Series, where we dive into the final and most potent phase: building real, lasting strength.
Over the last two blogs, we’ve explored why starting smart matters (FOUNDATIONS) and how to unlock your metabolic engine (60 LEAN).
Now, it’s time to pull it all together and show you how to build a body that doesn’t just perform but thrives for decades to come.
This final step isn’t just about lifting heavier weights; it’s about transforming your muscles, bones, and hormones to protect your future health.
All of this is part of a bigger truth most don’t realize:
Strength training isn’t optional if you want to stay strong, energetic, and capable for life. It’s essential.
And if you’re going to invest your time, energy, and resources into improving your body, you deserve to know the whole picture.
Why Strength Changes Everything
After the excitement of getting “back in shape” wears off, many people hit a plateau.
They may stay lean, maybe a little fitter, but then they undoubtedly start to feel:
- More fragile
- More prone to nagging injuries
- Less resilient to stress, both physically and mentally
Without progressive strength training, the body slowly starts to lose its “armor.”
Muscle mass declines.
Bone density decreases.
Performance and energy wane.
You don’t feel “young and strong,” you begin to feel “thin and tired.”
Many adults lose 3–5% of their muscle mass per decade after age 30 if they’re not actively working against it. But with the right strength training (i.e. lifting heavy enough, consistently enough, and smart enough), you can not only stop that decline but reverse it.
The Real Science Behind Building Strength (and Why It Matters)
Strength training isn’t just about adding weight to a bar. It’s about creating profound changes inside your body.
When we first start exercising, there is a period of adaptation. The lungs get a little stronger, and the brain has to remember how to communicate efficiently with the body’s muscles.
I say remember because most of us were born with this innate capability and used it often as children, sports or no sports.
Over time, as you endure the demands of sedentary life, your baseline slowly drops, your body “deprioritizes” these functions, and eventually, you begin to feel all those little nagging pains from sitting, driving, and not moving your body the way it was designed to.
Once you’ve built your base and begun improving your cardiovascular health, the last box that needs to be checked is building your strength.
Remember I said that your brain needs to “reconnect” to the muscles? Well, the first few stages of your workouts should be geared towards accomplishing this goal. However, once it’s been achieved, it’s time to take things up a notch because once the brain and the body are working well together, it’s time to actually start challenging the muscles for the next layer of adaptation. The strength phase teaches the muscles to work together to lift heavier and heavier things.
Benefits from this gradual process include:
- Intramuscular Coordination: Teaching your muscles and nervous system to fire more efficiently, leading to faster, stronger movements.
- Increased Joint Stability: Protect your knees, hips, shoulders, and spine by training the muscles around them to work in harmony.
- Boosted Bone Density: Heavy, skillful strength training sends powerful signals to your bones to adapt and grow stronger, a critical factor in preventing fractures and age-related decline.
- Enhanced Metabolic Health: Muscle mass is metabolically active. The more quality muscle you have, the better your metabolism runs, helping regulate blood sugar, fat burning, and energy levels.
- Greater Resilience to Stress: Strong bodies handle physical and emotional stress better. It’s that simple.
Almost everywhere you look today, researchers, modern science, and progressive medicine emphasize the importance of strength and maintaining muscle as the currency for health and longevity.
From Dr. Peter Attia to Dr. Stacy Sims, one thing is clear: Building a strong body isn’t just about looks anymore; it’s about enhancing our lifespan.
The Difference Between Lifting and LIFTING
There’s a big difference between lifting weights and lifting for strength.
Clients tell me all the time, “I lift weights,” and then proceed to tell me how they use 25s or 50s during their workouts.
My follow-up question is this: “Do you have to think about picking those weights up?”
90% of the time, the answer is NO.
A simple difference between just lifting and strength training is the amount of intention you place on picking up the weight. Strength training requires body awareness and intentional setting up to ensure the posture is aligned, and focus must be applied to actually move the prescribed weight for the desired set.
Doing 25-pound dumbbell deadlifts while having a conversation about the game last night rarely makes the cut for being “heavy enough.”
Here are a few more thoughts on keys for a productive strength-building program:
- You learn to move heavy loads safely and powerfully through primary movement patterns like squat, hinge, push, pull, carry, and sprint (we call these our 10 Human Movement Principles).
- You learn and begin to understand how to apply progressive overload without overtraining or injury.
- You learn to balance heavy lifting with smart recovery practices so you can keep stacking wins without breaking down.
When you actually do strength training, you learn how to do more than just work out—you learn to build a body that can work harder, recover faster, and handle life better.
Sadly, most people haven’t been taught how to do this.
The Metabolic Power of Lifting for Strength
Beyond muscle and movement, strength training plays a powerful role in your metabolism.
Lean muscle mass isn’t just for looks — it’s the engine that drives your metabolism.
When you focus on strength:
- You increase your body’s resting energy expenditure (you burn more calories at rest)
- You improve insulin sensitivity (critical for fat loss and energy regulation)
- You enhance hormone balance (testosterone, growth hormone, etc.)
- You strengthen bone density and connective tissue (essential for long-term health)
In other words, if fat loss, better energy, and living longer in a healthy body are part of your goals… lifting heavy things well should be too.
Introducing 85 STRONG: A Program Designed For Strength
85 STRONG is a 12-week strength and resilience-focused program designed to help clients with a strong base physically and mentally:
- Master proper technique under load
- Build explosive power, coordination, and athleticism
- Teach their body to handle heavier weights while staying mobile and pain-free
- Expand their ability to perform in and out of the gym
- Future-proof their body against aging, injuries, and lifestyle demands
In short, we’ve designed a program to help clients train smarter — with guidance, coaching, and a plan — not just “harder” for the sake of it.
How It Fits Into the Big Picture
As discussed in this three-part series, there is a clear path to training smarter for continuous growth and progress. In my career (two decades now), this progression is broken down into three phases of program development:
FOUNDATIONS ➔ 60 LEAN ➔ 85 STRONG
Each phase of The Ascension Training Series aims to build your body and your habits from the ground up:
- FOUNDATIONS: Build your movement quality, core strength, posture, and baseline conditioning.
- 60 LEAN: Unlock your metabolic engine, condition your body, train smarter, and achieve sustainable fat loss.
- 85 STRONG: Maximize strength, durability, athleticism, and confidence for long-term success.
Each layer prepares you for the next — setting you up for a body (and life) that keeps getting stronger, year after year.
Is 85 STRONG Right For You?
Entering into a strength training program like this isn’t for everyone. But, If you’re ready to:
- Break through your current strength and fitness plateaus
- Build real muscle without sacrificing mobility
- Increase your daily energy and resilience
- Future-proof your joints, bones, and muscles
- Train smarter, harder, and with more purpose
Then 85 STRONG just might be the answer to the challenges you’ve been facing.
This isn’t about chasing numbers on a barbell. It’s about pursuing your potential — and refusing to settle for anything less.
In Closing
Over the last three blog posts, I have shared invaluable information with you to ensure that you are informed and empowered with the knowledge to analyze your current activities, training, and goals.
As you read through each section of this series, it’s my hope that you pause to reflect and consider where you are on your journey to identify the goals that you have for yourself at this current stage of your life.
You may be getting started and realizing that building your foundation is the most important step. Maybe you’ve been building your foundation, and now you’re ready to increase your cardiovascular health or decrease your body fat. Maybe you’ve been spinning your wheels for months only to realize that you haven’t been lifting the way you now know you should.
Whatever the case may be, I hope you take this information and act on it. Living life in a healthy, pain-free body is something everyone can enjoy, and working out the right way isn’t just something for the “fit, pretty, and popular.” It can be a life-changing and empowering experience, and that is something everyone deserves to experience.
